Jason Wingard
3 Sport Athlete • West Chester

Dr. Jason Wingard stands among the most accomplished and well-rounded student athletes in the storied history of West Chester B. Reed Henderson High School. A three-sport standout in football, basketball, and track & field, Wingard earned 10 varsity letters and was a perennial All-Ches-Mont, All-District, All-Area, and All-State performer across all three sports.

In track and field, Wingard was a leading scoring member of Henderson’s championship teams and one of Pennsylvania’s elite hurdlers. He captured the Pennsylvania State Championship title in the 300-meter hurdles and set the record for the fastest time in program history while leading Henderson to back-to-back team state championships. In 1991, he also ran the lead-off leg for the now infamous high school boys 4x400 meter relay team that won the Penn Relays Championship of America.

In football, Wingard earned All-Ches-Mont, All-Area, and All-District honors as a wide receiver, punt returner, and safety. Renowned for his speed, versatility, and relentless stamina, he set school records in 1990 with 15.4 yards per reception, and 19.4 yards per punt return, anchoring Henderson’s offense, defense, and special teams while providing leadership as team captain.

In basketball, Wingard was a four-year varsity starter and one of the region’s most dominant rebounders and defenders. As a power forward and four-time All-Area selection, he led Henderson to two Ches-Mont League Championships and guided the team to its deepest run in the PIAA District 1 Championship Tournament in two decades.

Beyond athletics, Wingard excelled academically and served as both class president and student council president throughout high school. His leadership, scholarship, and multi-sport excellence earned him the coveted 1991 Daily Local News Butch McDevitt Award as Chester County’s Most Outstanding Athlete.

Recruited by the iconic Stanford University football head coach Dennis Green—along with famed assistants Tyrone Willingham and Brian Billick—Wingard accepted a Division I scholarship to play football for Stanford University, while simultaneously being recruited in track and field by internationally renowned and legendary coach Brooks Johnson. At Stanford, he played under Green, and later Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, contributing to the 1991 Aloha Bowl championship over Georgia Tech, the 1992 Pac-10 Co-Championship team, and the 1992 Blockbuster Bowl victory over Penn State. In track, he competed under head coach Vin Lananna, later President of USA Track & Field, and maintained one of the top 10 all-time 400-meter hurdle marks at Stanford for 20 years. He was also recognized for academic excellence as a Pac-10 Academic All-American Honorable Mention.

After his collegiate career, Wingard ascended to national prominence as a university president, corporate executive, and thought leader. He has served as President of Temple University, Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University, Vice Dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and Chief Learning Officer at Goldman Sachs. The author of four award-winning and best-selling books, he currently serves as a senior advisor and professor at Harvard University and as a corporate board member or advisor at Kroll, Comcast, and Pepsi.

A proud member of both the Henderson High School Hall of Fame and Athletic Wall of Fame, and Chester County’s Sports Hall of Fame, Dr. Jason Wingard’s legacy reflects not only extraordinary athletic achievement but also a lifelong commitment to leadership, excellence, and service.
